Larsen

 

Nella Larsen (1891-1964): From 1912 to 1915, Larsen trained as a nurse in New York. Upon completion, she left New York to work at John Andrew Memorial Hospital and the Nurse Training School. She returned to New York in 1916 and three year later, she got married. In 1928, her first novel, Quicksand was published. Her second novel, Passing was published a year later. 1930 was a good year for her. Her story "Sanctuary" was published and she won the Guggenheim Fellowship. She was the first African American woman to receive this award. After traveling to Europe and attempting to publish another novel, she went into obscurity in 1934 after she was accused of plagiarism. For the next thirty years, she worked as a nurse in Brooklyn.
