·         Renaissance is French word for Rebirth.

·         Took place in Harlem, New York through the 1920s and 1930s.

·         Was also known as the Negro movement.

·         Harlem is located in the northern borough of Manhattan

·         Blacks started to move into Harlem around 1900, because of race riots in Manhattan where many African Americans had lived, and were in search of new homes, and  a real estate crash. This made homes affordable.

·         Jazz was the main music for this time period

·         Duke Ellington,  Jelly Roll Martin,  Willie “the lion” Smith, Louis Armstrong.

·         White people took taxis to the main night clubs to hear these talented musicians.

·         The night clubs included the Cotton Club, and Savoy Ballroom

·         Not only men but women had an impact on the Harlem movement. Singers included: Billie Holiday, Josephine Baker, and Bessie Smith.
